Need some help--my starter spins but it won't engage the motor to turn over--any suggestions??

Starter clutch. Pull the stator crankcase cover. It's behind the rotor for the stator. You will need a puller and of course a used good one or a new one. What year and model do you have?

Sorry--1982 GS1100GL.

I've got the left cover off and everything spins--it just doesn't grab. If I spin the large gear by hand and try again it will grab a little, but not enough to turn it.

Not sure if you got this last post.

Do they go bad all at once--or should I have seen it coming? It's been starting like a champ.

If I turn the rotor--it turns the crank. The local repair shop also recommended the starter clutch. Do you know what size the bolt holes in the rotor are?? Looks like I can drive 3 bolts in and drive the rotor off the shaft, correct?? I also have a puller, but I'm reluctant to go too far not knowing exactly what size those bolts holes are??

it requires a special puller. the part #is mp29 its a 35mmX1.5 right hand thread. i just ordered 1 from http://www.repairmanual.com/items/17/10472 or take it to a shop that has 1. u only need it to remove it. to put it back on u just torque it to 75lbs. the holes in my fly wheel werent threaded. the shop i took my bike to tryed to thread them. then the bolts just pulled out putting metal shavings all over the flywheel. now there in my stator. i hope i find them all.

looks easy enough with the puller, BUT, how do you break loose the nut securing the whole thing. The manual says to loosen it, then use the puller. I can't get it to turn without turning the crank. Any input??

Just wondering what kind of mileage you're getting out of the 82 GS1100?

Put it in gear and have a buddy hold the rear brake down.

I recently did this procedure on an 82 1100G. I bought an impact gun (electric) from Harbor Freight for cheap. Worked like a charm getting that rotor nut off. NOTHING else worked. Earlfor suggested a giant homemade version of an oil filter tool. I was too frustrated to try it. You'll need that special puller, use a three hole style may knacker things up(can you say "replace the crank"?) Get a gasket ahead of time. While expensive, getting the multipiece unit means you'll forget about having to mess with it again ever. You'll need those three bolts(cheap and available at your local Suzi dealer) Pay attention to the "spacer gasket" location. With the impact wrench from the get-go it shouldn't be a tough repair, except to the wallet. Good luck! RJ

I think I'm gonna get one of those electric impact wrenches since I don't have a buddy to stomp on the rear brake for me.

air tools r great. I'm glad i spent the money when i worked at a shop. they have saved me alot of money doing things like this. if u do your own work there worth it. are you using a 110v, 12v, or cordless. iv never tryed a electric impact. are they good on truck tires.
o ad i wish i knew the gas mileage I'm still waiting for my puller so i can replace my starter clutch. iv had it 4 a month now and its been in the shop sense then last Friday i decided to remove it from the shop and haul it the 300miles to ware i work. didn't have time to work on it now i have to make time.
shops suck they always take there time boning me

Thanks for all the input--this retaining nut is just a standard L/H thread--no tricks like needing to loosen clockwise, correct??

That's correct. The difficulty is (on mine) it hadn't been loosened since the factory installed it 25 years ago. My manual spec'd the torque at 115 lbs (I think). That's TIGHT!

BTW Chef- I wish you wouldn't point out to the whole world I don't have any friends. *
