Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Used stator putting out right voltage?

Okay so I recently had my stator go bad and I bought a used one on ebay for a good deal. I hooked it all back up and ran the test in the stator papers where you test AC voltage between each lead coming from the stator at 5k rpm. However, when I checked it at 5k rpm it was giving me closer to 80+ volts rather than 60+ volts. The only reason I'm concerned is because while the diameter of the used stator matches the old one off the bike, it was slightly wider than the old one. I don't think this should matter but if it does I would love to know. For now I have not hooked it up to the R/R so I don't do any damage to the rest of the system if something IS wrong. Thanks in advance!

80 volts is in the expected range and the stator is healthy. No need to worry

Yeah, 80 volts is good, but I would be concerned about the extra width.

It's possible that someone put on a narrow one some time in the past and this one is back to "normal" width, but I would check to make sure.

Well, if the bike is running at 5,000 rpm without any horrible noises, it sounds like it'll be fine with the slightly wider stator.

Thanks guys! I have most of it put back together already and am going to take it out today in a little bit to see how it's running. Just for the record, taking that cover off is a pain and that little gear that runs to the starter has to be held in by a second person, otherwise I would have never gotten it in!

Funny, I have never had problems with the starter gear. :-k

Did you realize that you can take the shaft that the gear rides on and put it in the engine, instead of the cover? Makes cover installation much easier.

Different companies could use thinner laminations ( or one less ) that would cause the stator to be a little less wide. I just replaced an original suzuki stator with another that is about .060 inch narrower -works fine. Also replaced unit has less globs of plastic than original, though windings are nice and tight. Keep your eye on your r/r now to ensure that it's happy and not getting too warm from all this new work!

Well a couple months back I had the R/R go bad so I replaced it. I also went through the wiring and replaced a couple bad wires that were just electrical taped together... It was awful. I think that it should be good now and hopefully I won't have any more issues with the charging.
