    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So i just got my first suzuki a 1981 GS450 T. and i want to get it running in tip top shape before hitting the road. I already plan on changing the spark plugs and oil, and i want to check the valves to make sure they are in spec but i was wondering if any one had the info for where the valves should be so i can change them correctly.

The bike runs pretty well right now but i know from past experiences that i should ensure that it is well maintained before i get to excited.

Any info or links to where i can find the info i need would be greatly appreciated!

Here it is once I got it home, I have since given it a well deserved bath to rid if of all the road grime an old oil stains.

It worked ok. If you get an account on a photo hosting website you can embed images that are full-size in the post. Using the image upload feature on the forum results in smaller images presented as thumbnails.
 
so i plan on attempting reading my valves tomorrow on my day off, is there a chart that will help me figure out what shims i may need once i get my measurements

Oh my...a history lesson. Goto the main page via the FORUM (Next to "What's New) link at the top left. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on "The GSResourcesHomepage". Under "GS Info" you will see "History". Under the same drop down menu you will see "Model Information".

You'll find out quirks about each model as well as likes and dislikes by members...let the show commence. lol

The math is pretty simple: of the clearance is too big, increase the size of the shim. A member here will share his spreadsheet that calculates it for you.

ok so im about to go measure up my clearneces and just wanted to double check on something here as it is a bit different than my yamahas that i'm used to... so to check the exhaust measurements you want to lobe going parallel and the intake you want ti perpendicular..?

Scroll back to post #3 in this thread and visit BassCliff's excellent website. You will find a wealth of info there, as well as factory service manuals that will tell you most of what you need to do. You can download one for your bike.

Mission success! i got my measurements and was able to remove my shims using the ziptie method! here is what i got...

Exhaust first then intake
(wasnt sure what was metric and what was inches so i wrote both)
.0015 .0015
.030 .030

.0023 .003
.063 .076

Shims
250x 250
260x 265
 
ok so i found a chart online and it looks like i need to replace exhaust 1 and 2 with 275's and replace intake 1 and 2 with a 310 and a 330?

does this sounds correct? i looked in the owners manual from basscliffs page but didnt see a chart in there... i also messaged steve but have not heard back from him yet.
so i geuss the next step is to get some shims from the shim pool
