Aint no way to change the bearings other than split them..in for a penny..in for a pound!!!! Doesnt need any new gears..just that shaft bearing.

I havent gotten into reading the manual to be briefed on the proceedure. All I know is the manual siad to remove the outer basket ( thus allowing access to the bearing) split the cases. See section 10.

Heres the manual pages I found. In the margin to the right of the manual itself are some little arrows. Put your mouse on them and it will say CLOSE SIDEBAR. This will remove the comments on the right.
In section 8 for the clutch youll see where it says to remove outer clutch split the cases. See section 10.

That train ran square into my fat azz Steve. Im not swimming in a sea of disposable cash but I am paying the rent and keeping ahead of the game for now. Can save a little each week and not be so stressed out.
Now I am dealing with the same issue that Jeepster is. Dr. has said I am very very close to being full blown diabetic. Gotta drop one of my favorite side dishes..potatoes. And cut back on pasta based dishes. Very hard to get wrapped around having to look for sugar free Strawberry Preservatives for my favorite PBJ sandwhiches.

Got the engine up on the bench this afternoon. Last time I started it ( yesterday morning ) it gave a little white smoke indicitive of the weeping stem seals. So I gotta deal with that too so its gonna be a few weeks till I can afford a full rebuild kit.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Got the engine out and cases split. Waiting on the bearing to show up. Then its get a rebuild gasket kit and have at it again. Also found another one with a seized engine, new seat cover, better looking gauges, and he said he has the gasket kit on hand. Maybe going to see what he will let it go for. Cant hurt to drop by and see.

Got the engine gasket kit and borrowed a spring compressor and got after the head. Replaced the valve stem seals and found 1 broken outer spring. Got one ordered up.
Todays plan is to work on getting the frame stripped the rest of the way and degrease and power wash it in prep for repainting.
Will try and get some pics of the cluster funk today. The tranny bearing outer race was split in half around the perimeter..like the bearings just wore into the race and sawed it into two slices. Good times!!!MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I went to the tool bar and now the MOVE THREAD sellection is no longer there. Frank had added it just a month ago....so whats up with that??? If I delete this one and start a new one then everyones responses are lost as well.

I notice the oil pan pics rather washed out If you see the 3 evenly spaced raised areas, they press against the pick up screen to hold it to the pump. ALL the other shavings in the pan and the screen are bearing remnants. I had taken the ball bearings out and tossed them prior to taking the picture.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
