    Fork oil clarification

78' 1000. I'm changing the fork oil with the forks on the bike (I've got one of the older fork braces on the bike and it is a real PITA to take it off and especially to put it back on or else I would have just taken them off). I've read lots of threads and know that the 'amount' is not as important as the 'same amount' in both forks. I know the stock measurement is 140mm. The thing I need clarification on is the fact that the forks are at an angle while on the bike. The clymers manual state "you will need to lift the rear end to straighten the front forks"...ummm, I would have to use a winch from the ceiling to get the back end high enough to make the front forks straight. So what do you guys do when the forks are on the bike to measure the fluid? Just in case it's a factor the bike has progressive springs up front.

Measure it right in the middle of the oil. One end will be high, the other low as compared to the fork tube.

And that measurement is to be taken with the springs out of the fork tubes and the forks completely collapsed.

Easiest way to ensure the same level in both legs is to attach a tube to the inut of a spray bottle, like an old Windex or Formula 409 bottle. Actually, if you have a MityVac, this is a perfect time to use it. Measure the distance you want, put a small clamp around the hose at that point. Slightly overfill the fork tube. Rest the clamp on the end of the fork tube, start pumping. When you start to draw air, the oil level has dropped below the bottom of your suction tube. Repeat for the other leg, they will be the same level. Install the springs, put the caps on, go for a ride.
