Starter motor - dead - gs550e 1980

Forum Sage
I have had issues with this starter motor in the past with the magnets coming off. I don't believe it's a recurrence of that issue as fixed in a previous thread.

The starter motor won't spin when I isolate it and provide 12 volts.
Over the past week it seemed to gradually become harder to start until today it is dead but the solenoid tests okay.

I have two questions:
- I am about to remove it which is not simple on the 550 requires tank , carbs and cam chain tensioner off to make it possible. A horrid task.

The old part number is
3110047011 H17 (one in bike)
Cmsnl says it's superseded by
3110049500 H17
What could cause this ?
I will advise when I have dismantled the status but I have never had an issue where the starter motor is just dead before.

- I am extremely concerned as we all should be as you simply cannot buy these starter motors anymore. If I can't fix it I am completely stuck. The bike is useless.

What are we to do about this ? Does anyone know anywhere to get starter motors fixed ? Does anyone know which of the Chinese ones available on eBay fit various GS bikes or had experience.
Surely this is a problem the club must tackle as soon these bikes will just stop .....without these parts.
Help !!!

Update - removed the starter after removing tank , carbs , cam chain tensioner. An awful job I hate. Always have an issue getting choke , throttle cable back on.

It didn't seem overly dirty but I cleaned it all and it now works fine.
I suppose it could be the brushes so I'll get a repair kit as a just in case for next time.

- any suggestions on where what to get in UK be useful. Wemoto shop kit ?

Also the magnets that failed after I tapped casing a while ago in a post on here (few posts down) are fine and secure.

Sm.it.works again .... A.long afternoon evening doing this .

“The starter motor won't spin when I isolate it and provide 12 volts.“
Does the temporary connection spark when you apply 12 Volts?
Before carb removal fun….
Take the stator cover off and remove immediate gear and see if you can spin starter motor by hand…..maybe you’ll hear/ feel loose magnets

Edit….slow hand! Congratulations

I just did carb fun back in April myself. Make sure airbox is as far back as possible . Put carb rack halfway in , attach throttle and choke cables and carry on?
Of course you double-checked cam chain tensioner for proper installation.

Edit. Lots of used starter motors on eBay, junkyards .

I have not seen a single starter motor for my GS and GSX in a year of looking !!!
Yes there are loads but not one of any use. It seems for my GS550e 1980 they simply are not available unless I buy the few available at cmsnl @ 850£.

Junkyards - 30 years ago I used them but now again I have zero luck finding a spare starter motor.

Q) anyone had experience of a starter motor repair kit and if so where did buy ? I just want someone's good experience and I will follow and buy at same place

-Wemoto have 1 available !!!!
-Using Ai to find people who can rebuild motorcycle starter motors

I've replaced brushes and reglued magnets back using high temperature contact adhesive. Starters been working perfect for the last 8 years.
