A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Best Motor Oil

I use the full synthetic 5w-40 rotella diesel oil. My suzi loves it..... :). I change it 3 times a year/riding season. Probably a bit of overkill but your oil is your engines lifeblood.

Any thoughts on rotella dino 15/40 vs. syn 5/40? Same 40 weight on the hot end, but will our motors do any better with the lighter weight on start-up?

If you are not often starting the bike in sub zero temps, it won't matter much... at normal riding temperatures they are both OK.

I was thinking of mixing the two Rotellas 50/50 to make 10W-40 like Suzuki recomended, it would be semi-synthetic? Never got around to it. Either one is fine.

I would not recommend this at all, we have wet clutches and ANYTHING synthetic will make it slip..... but its your bike...

Synthetic does NOT make wet clutches slip. Have used synthertic oil in MANY motorcycles. Urban legend BS that is not true.

Rotella T6 synthetic oil, 5W40, is JASO MA certified, so it is OK for wet clutches.

Jim - thanks for clarifying. BUT there is a big deference between Rotella type oils which is mainly for diesel engines and regular off the shelf synthetic oil for regular car engines.

Energy Conserving Oil = clutch slippage. It has friction modifiers to promote better fuel mileage in car engines. Ruins wet clutches. Usually it is 10W-30 or thinner.
Synthetic by itself does not promote clutch slippage, never has. I have run it in a lot of wet clutch motorcycles since the 70s. AmsOil, Mobil 1, all kinds of oils.

I have even put it in bikes that had worn clutches that were just starting to slip, it didnt make the slipping any worse.

Yeah and I think all YOUR Post are BS.... you don't know as much as you think you do!!!!!! stop jumping on the boat and do some research before you post your bad info...I have been PM people to correct info after following your post for a while...LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!!!

After living within an hour of Tom and riding with him on several occasions I can assure you he has forgotten more about motorcycles than you'll ever know. Try listening to his advice and actually following it before you bad mouth someone you have never met.

Tom may not pull any punches and some may even consider that rude, but he knows his GSs. He's also been on GSR long enough to make lots of friends. Be careful before you alienate yourself from one of the best GS resources out there.

Not a threat...a friendly warning.

Thanks Marc - and I agree a 100%, but it does go both ways... we have a lot very YOUNG first time mechanics on here trying to revive the same GS's that we love and work so hard to keep alive. If they feel humiliated for asking a question they may not want to come back... I know if my skin was not so thick, I would not came back.......

My farm store didnt have my Mystic JT8 15W40 sludge so I used some Rotella sludge. I swear the Bike had a smoother clutch with the Mystic sludge and now thay have it for $27.99 for 5 gallons. $5.60 a gallon.....less than a buck and a half a qt.......Im going to get two pails !
