How to ruin a perfectly good stock frame

Awesome stuff MLC, glad to hear you're enjoying her.. and yeah interesting testing there! Haha

Not sure when you'll see this or anything but if Rich is still around I believe he'll be hanging out at the Do The Ton stand or stall or whatever it is... I believe I saw G25 somewhere if that means anything... of course you don't have to go look for him either... ;)

that s a new testing procedure!

It was a bit of a surprise to me... :o But if there was any doubt to the structural integrity of the frame, it has been wiped away completely haha

I'm loving it Pete... we ended up leaving first thing sunday morning since my dad's ironhead wasn't charging. Tried a few things but couldn't get it to charge, so we just ran as far as we could on one fully charged battery, then switched to another charged battery I got from a friend... and that got us to about 35 miles from home where my wife showed up with the truck to get him. I rode the last 35 miles and gave my bike a big hug when I pulled into my driveway!

Friggin sweet!

Thanks!

I think this picture sums up the trip pretty well... awesome weather, fun times, and a great story.

Excellent! Glad it was good fun!

Tell your dad to get a Honda R/R... it can have an R/R upgrade just like our trusty GS' ;)

Ha I think it was more likely the 32 year old generator... only thing he hasn't replaced on the bike... tested good a while back, so he didn't replace it. The guy that did the work on the bike for him didn't replace the original wiring harness, so I'm going to wire it up from scratch with new wire for him... 30+ year old wires just have too much resistance in them and will eventually burn something up.

He also said to tell all the suzuki guys that the american made bike lost this round, but will be back! haha

Good call, old wires aren't the best... still contemplating a new harness in the back of my mind but that can come later if I do it...

Hahaha nice one! Glad to see he's got a sense of humour... he'll need it more with the American Iron vs. the Suzuki's... hahahaha ;)

Overall I'm really impressed with how my bike handled 400 miles this weekend....especially since I was still working on a few things friday morning when I woke up haha.

The fender has a nice crack in it from flexing from the weight of me and my pack, so that's the first thing I'll need to work on. Then I'll get the smaller sportster tank finished and sealed up. I'll probably make a shorter sissy bar for the daily commute, and then I'll paint it up nice and see if I can make bike of the month...

Glad it all worked out for you, man! I have to say - I was a liiiiiiiiittle bit skeptical, given the time frame :D

Well done, mate!!

and then I'll paint it up nice and see if I can make bike of the month...

hahahah I'd vote for it. I feel too many BOM's are stock, or very close to stock. While I like the stock, I see no reason that some crazy cool GS builds couldn't be BOM.

I like your bike.

So I want you guys to know that I'm still working on the bike and cleaning things up, but at a much slower rate.

Since the trip I have fixed the crack in my fender so it doesn't flex nearly as bad and rub the tire and I picked up a tube and mounted my vintage 2.75x19 pirelli mt53. Looks SO much better. Definitely fits the bike better. Also makes the bike handle more responsively? I guess a more narrow tire is easier to turn? Also I somehow managed to drop a pod filter in the yard when we left for the trip this past weekend so when I saw that I just pulled the other one off and stuck it in my bag... So I put both my filters on and went for a test ride with the fender fix and new front tire... Wow this things flies now! It has much more power with the filters and new dyna ignition. Was the 1980 model gs450 stronger than the '82 model? Sure feels that way. It pulls the front wheel off the ground now, even with the heavy springer.

New tire:

Oh yeah I stripped the black powder coat off the front wheel too. I'll get to the back later...

Looks like a helluva scoot man. I definitely didn't see this at Barbers........

Promise I was there. Well Friday afternoon and most if the day Saturday I was.

I meant I would have definitely stopped to check it out. I was stuck in the swap meet most of the weekend. That was that G 25 reference Pete mentioned.

Ok, first of all, looking good as always, and glad to hear you got the guard mount sorted as that could've gotten interesting...

Now... new Dyna ignition???? C'mon you didn't tell me you were doing that!! Is this the DS3-3C that's in mine as well? How did you go getting it in? Did you grind a bit off the plate to get the oil pressure switch screw some clearance or leave it as is? Inquiring minds need to know...

Sorry I didn't come find you... I was mostly preoccupied trying to keep my dad from worrying about his bike problems. I should've let him haul it over in the back of the truck instead of riding with me. He worried all weekend. I'll definitely be back next year though!

I dig the bike, looks like a 53 chev could be your next project?

Yeah it's a '52 chevy fleetline, but I'm going to fix it up a little more an sell it to focus on bikes. I'm too ADD for a full on car project, and I can build bikes pretty quick haha.

Yep, Dyna... it was my only hope to get the bike running in my short time frame for Barber. I ordered the same kit as you for the gs400, but got it from someone on ebay. Came with the coils, and I picked up some plug wires from the local parts store. I didn't modify the oil pressure switch screw or anything... I'm not running an oil pressure light so the wire was already cut short down there... so I just tucked it out of the way and it didn't seem to be too close with the new plate on. And I just filed a nylon washer down for fitment on the rotor. Runs SO MUCH STRONGER now with the ignition that actually makes a strong spark. :)

Aaah awesome! Glad to hear it's running better with the Dyna :D

If you want to run the oil pressure switch (I personally don't like having it disconnected) it's real easy to tie in too.

I'll have to tell the guys at Dynatek there's another one in the wild now too ;)
