    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I found the lower TT conversion bearing through a local O'Reilly's and they had one sent over from another store. Then, I found the spacer washer that I needed at a local hardware store! God was looking out for me today. :biggrin:
Tomorrow I am getting the wife to pull the frame off the rack and move it to where I can work on it. Perhaps I can get the Kawasaki front end installed tomorrow along with the tire and calipers/hoses. If that goes well,
I will at least install a temporary 1100E swing arm and tire so that I might have a rolling chassis. I might even find some time to hone the cylinders and get the pistons installed. ;) We shall see...
 
Well today turned sour from the get go. After a very late start, 3:30 this afternoon, I discovered that the wrong steering head bearing was in the box!!! :mad:
So, I tinkered with a few small items that needed paint and/or cleaning and protectant. I got my wife to move the frame from the back shed to the shop.
With no chance of getting the chassis together until the correct bearing arrives, I turned to the engine.
I test fit the cylinders to see if the case might need trimming and thankfully it did not. Then, I installed the gray heavy duty cam chain tensioner guide and
installed the piston rings and the pistons onto the con rods. I also included a picture of the excellent "mixed bag of bits" that Raymond Chan at Rennsport Automotive
put together for me last week. All custom length, angle, colors and mixed threaded parts to make up the complete SS brake line system.





Hopefully, I will find the correct steering bearing tomorrow and get with the program. Did I forget to mention just how much the required crutches get in the damn way and slow progress!? :mad:
 
Slow to no progress today. I managed to get the cylinders finish honed. Whoopty do! That's it. :(

I am sure the ZukiGods will understand if you take a day of rest....so just make plans to take a day off.

I haven't touched mine in a couple weeks, although I did start working on my mower carburetor yesterday.

Have bought 2 sets of lines from Rennsport. Fast service and an excellent product.
 
Me and the OP had a PM exchange where I told him of the sun fade problems I had with the red ones I got for the 85 750EF.Inside of 6 months the red was gone where ever the sun hit them.Inside of a year the coating was chunking off.I got clear ones from Rennsport for the 550 opposed piston caliper conversion and have not had any problems with them.
 
I finally got a chance to do something/anything to this project to make some forward progress today. Yeah! Still hobbling around on crutches that continue to get in the *%#@&$# way! :mad:
As no one makes a conversion bearing or kit to make the '84 GPZ front end work in the GS frame, I made the sleeve to fit the steering head. After boring over the steering head, I installed the new spacer sleeve, race and front end.
I just mocked up the bits for now to see what other modifications that I may have to make. I only took a before installation pic and a pic of the race inside the sleeve to share. Then kept on going through the pain.
The front end is now together and awaiting to see if I have to modify the '86 GS550ES handlebar risers depending on how they feel when I finish getting the chassis together with the seat installed.

As it was almost 45 degrees out and partly sunny, I should have been out riding like any other motorcyclist would be doing with a day off. But, as I am still somewhat immobile, I tried to do something/anything to the bike to ease the pain of NOT riding. :mad:
So, I mounted the front calipers, tire and brake hoses to the new front end. That was enough "work" (almost nothing) to get my leg hurting enough to call it quits for the day. :( At least it was some progress. ;)

Not a Ninja front end. It is an '84 GPZ750A-2 front end. Surprised that no one noticed the 130/90-18 tire actually. ;) And, that none of the forum owners of the GPZ's recognized it. :confused:

Anyhow, if the inside is healing as fast as the outside, I should be skiing and dirt bike riding again in no time. :cool:

I did notice it was an 83+GPZ fork.Was the 1100's fork that trashed?

Nope. They are in great shape and destined for another project some day. I just do not want this bike to look like every other Red GS1100E out there. That would be too boring. Too "vanilla".
 
Painted the underside of the front fender a couple of coats of cheap black paint and painted the top a couple of coats of silver undercoat. Cold and starting to snow so hoping for the best.
I will still have to sand the top and add a couple more coats of silver undercoat to make it presentable anyway.
 
Finished boring a few more of the required spacers for the rear rim installation and started mocking up the many puzzle pieces of the frame for one of the front fairings that I am contemplating using.
Ordered the $38.00 :eek: of new rubber inserts to make them all new from Deland. At least I have ALL of the discontinued (unobtainium) parts but two. :D
Hopefully, those two won't be too terribly difficult to make. The missing Bandit chain guard arrived a few days ago for basically the cost to ship it! :cool:
 
Kinda/sorta figured out how the puzzle pieces fit together after bending the smashed tabs and re-tapping the caged nuts for the fairing.(It was involved in a crash before I got the parts years ago.)
Of course, it will all have to come back apart and get painted but it seems that it just might work! ;) I will have to weld some lower bosses onto the frame for the lower mounts.
I also painted the underside and top of the only 18" front fender that I have and will have to do plenty of sanding before I finish it up.




 
Most likely, some form of blue is in the works. Just not a dark blue. Close to that factory blue but not quite.
