DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just bought another junker

Engine is already on the way to being satin black (VHT Caliper Paint) to insure that the crank will not twist. LOL!
I might just have to use the Hannigan fairing instead with more modern incorporated turn signal lenses. (nice to have options)
I am trying to make it look like no one else's GS1100E besides the 1230 w/mods improvements hiding under the skin.
I will possibly be keeping the 1100E markings as I have a nice new OEM set of those collecting dust that are dying to be used. ;)
Many choices in the exhaust department too. I might try a few of them. (SS, stock black chrome w/mods, Kerker, etc.)

Doctor told me yesterday that I could try it without the crutches from now on so I got a little too busy with this project. (painful!!!)
Anyway, I did get one of my stock 1100E swing arms all greased up and installed, mounted the rear wheel temporarily, mounted the shocks and
am calling it quits for now. At least it can be rolled around I guess. (I didn't try.) Time for some pain pills. :(

Supposed to almost hit 50F tomorrow so I will see if I can get the pistons stabbed into the cylinders I hope. I have been doing all of the usual Christmas stuff like buying
gifts and thanking God that I am healing very well and WILL be riding again very soon.

Spent a couple of hours in the shop today. Finished milling the gouge in the crankcase...

Installed the APE heavy duty studs and lok-tited them into place. Started to install the pistons into the cylinders and
a buddy stopped by on one of his bikes (Harley Fat Bob) and delivered my Christmas present direct from Bangkok, Thailand!
(If you are going to wear a H-D T-shirt, it might as well be from half way around the world. ;) LOL!)
At least my friend ACTUALLY RIDES them when it is only 35-40F outside. He also has a GS1100E and a GPZ750 so, he is still cool in my book.

Love the thread. I still remember the original photo, which took me several days to identify as an '83 11e.

Keep up the good work healing and wrenching.

Enjoying this thread, makes me feel a "bit" better about the project I am attempting.

With Christmas behind me it was time to get off of my still somewhat broken butt and get back to work. It was a wonderful 10F this morning so I waited until the current toasty 36F to get out to the shop.
I think that I will fire up the off-road diesel powered kerosene heater when I go back out after posting these pic's as it did feel a bit chilly working on this. Anyhow, I finished getting the pistons stabbed into
their new burrows and installed the ported/polished, over-sized valves (29.5 & 25mm), shortened valve guides, HD springs cylinder head onto the custom made Cometic MLS cylinder head gasket.
Moving along slower than a turtle...

Finished torquing the cylinder head down using the APE H.D. nuts that I got from Blowerbike, installed the powder coated starter cover that tkent did for me back when he was home injured,
installed the oil temp. & pressure senders into the oil line block that I got from GregT over a year ago. Lots of GSR member acquired parts are going into this project. ;)

They will work with those #s. If you want killer bottom end & midrange, try 105/107. Killer midrange & top end try 109/111. Exhaust cam is always the bigger #.
Ray.

Still very cold here but today hit a very warm 44F ! I managed to tinker a bit and installed the battery box, the fuse/solenoid panel, rear tail tool tray and all new rubber grommets/stainless fasteners.
I could not find my slightly longer set of rocker arms that I was going to use on the intake cam! I did remove the oil bumps from a set of standard rockers and faced the pads.
(picture shows the modified rockers with one row of stock for comparison). I also took my nicest cam cover and painted it today. also installed the 1150E oil cover with new filter and
stainless steel fasteners. (somehow I managed to NOT install the filter backwards. LOL!)

We shall see if I can get the rockers/shafts installed tomorrow along with the camshafts...

Did not get much done today. I did get the rocker shafts, springs, shims and rockers installed though. I used a trick that I have used for more than 40 years on shaft mounted rockers.
I installed some .2mm shim washers to help increase the spring side load pressure on the rockers. In this pic, I tried to get the shim that the spring rides on.

Not much done today at all. I did get the cam sprockets installed on the cams and the cams installed with new grade 12.9 Allan bolts to replace the factory grade 10.9 bolts in the cam caps.
Liberal dose of Moly assembly lube on cam bearings and rocker pads of course.

The bike looks a little cold and lonely while outside "chillin" literally. ;)

be aware to change the oil early...the moly lube tends to plug the oil filters...
it also seems to stay in the pan once dissolved....i have always used belray and this is my findings.
good stuff though.
